We Get It
Hiring a Contractor Is Scary
You've heard the horror stories. Maybe you've lived one. Here's how we make sure you don't have another.
Fear No.1
"It's going to cost way more than they said."
The change order nightmare.
How We Handle It
We give you a detailed Fixed Price Proposal — not a vague estimate. Every line item is spelled out so you know exactly what you're paying for before we start. If a less-detailed contractor gives you a lower number, it's probably because the scope is different — and you'll likely see the real cost show up later as change orders.
If something does change during the build (your decision, or something unforeseen like hidden rot), we calculate the cost, explain it, and get your written approval before proceeding. No surprises.
"What really stood out about CBR was that they didn't seem to be trying to increase the price of the project any chance they got. They gave us honest options throughout."
— Marissa, Deck Project
Fear No. 2
"They'll never finish on time."
The project that drags on forever.
How We Handle It
We build a construction schedule for every project and share it with you through our online client portal — you can see exactly what's happening today, this week, and what's coming next. If something shifts, you'll know why.
We'll be straight with you: we will occasionally choose to take a little more time to get something right, rather than rush it and sacrifice quality. Our clients have told us they appreciate that tradeoff. But we'll never leave you guessing about where things stand.
Fear No. 3
"My house is going to be a disaster zone."
Dust everywhere, strangers in your space, total chaos.
How We Handle It
We know your life doesn't stop because you're remodeling. Most of our clients stay in their homes during the entire project, so we take job-site cleanliness seriously. We use HEPA negative air filtration, dust control barriers between work areas and your living space, and we bring our own portable restrooms.
Will there be some dust? Honestly, yes — especially during demo and drywall. But we minimize it, and when the project is done, we clean the work area and any adjacent rooms that were affected.
Fear No. 4
"I won't know what's going on with my own project."
Radio silence from the contractor.
How We Handle It
This is probably the single biggest complaint homeowners have about other contractors, and it's the one we've worked hardest to solve. You get full access to our online project management portal from day one — schedule, budget, daily updates, photo uploads, selections, and direct messaging with our team.
You will never have to wonder what's happening with your project. It's all right there, updated in real time.
"I LOVE the project management program they use to keep us updated on the status and to message back and forth."
— Marissa, Deck Project
Fear No. 5
"What if it doesn't look like what I imagined?"
The gap between expectation and reality.
How We Handle It
Gary Chagnon has been doing architectural design since 1990. He doesn't just build what you describe — he works with you to refine the vision, asks the questions you haven't thought of, and produces detailed drawings so you can see exactly what you're getting before construction starts.
We spend a lot of time on planning and design upfront for exactly this reason. It's much easier (and cheaper) to move a wall on paper than in real life.
"Gary and Pat work well together and their level of craftsmanship is so beautiful, there is so much attention to detail. The finished product is more than I could have asked for!"
— Kimberly, Front Porch
Fear No. 6
"What if I pick the wrong contractor?"
The one that keeps you up at night.
How We Handle It
We actually encourage you to interview multiple contractors. Ask detailed questions. Compare proposals line by line — not just the bottom number. The contractor who asks you the most questions is usually the one who'll give you the most accurate pricing and the fewest surprises.
For our part: we've been doing this since 1992. We're fully licensed (MA GC #060175), fully insured with general liability and worker's comp, BBB accredited since 2011, and every review we've gotten is 5 stars. Gary and Patrick are personally involved in every project — this isn't a company where you talk to a salesperson and then never see them again.
"This is the contractor you wished you'd hired."
— Sean
Fear No. 7
"I can't afford to do this right now."
The budget reality check.
How We Handle It
We're not going to pressure you into a project you can't afford. Our consultation is free, and part of that conversation is understanding your budget and being honest about what's realistic within it. Sometimes the right answer is "let's do this in phases" or "let's adjust the scope to fit your budget."
We accept cash, check, and major credit cards. We don't offer financing directly, but we're happy to work with you on a plan that makes sense. The worst thing you can do is hire a cheaper contractor who gives you a vague estimate and then hits you with change orders — that "savings" disappears fast.
The Bottom Line
We Built Our Business on Not Being That Contractor
Every system we use, every process we follow, and every conversation we have with our clients comes back to one thing: making sure you feel good about this experience from start to finish.
